CJ if you don't think you would use it that much, there may be other, cheaper machines out there that would work very nicely for you.. Cookies, for one thing are hard to do with a hand mixer. I haven't looked to see what is out there, since I haven't been in the market for one for a long time. When I was baking more, with DH carrying lunches, so lots of cookies to be made and kids to help eat them, I had a Oster and it was a combination, mixer, blender, and grinder - one motor and you changed the head for what ever you wanted. I used that a lot and really liked it, but I highly doubt that they are still on the market - but I haven't looked for it either. I'm sure there other ones out there that would do for your needs, and on the other hand, maybe if you had the KA, you would like it so well that you would use it more.

The Kitchenaide also has a lot of attachments available to use-grinder, pasta maker, etc. I have one that #1 and #2 gave me, it's been a lifesaver many times. I have the bowl lift, also came across a second bowl that fits. Mine came with a stainless one, which is really light and easy to use. The other is glass and very heavy with a stainless band around it-that's definitely a two hand bowl.
